Kosmodrom Baykonur is located in the desert of Kazakhstan, but is actually leased to Russia.

It was the first and the biggest launching pad for rockets in the world, built around the 50's.

Struggling since 1991, (when most of the projects were left behind - see the pictures), the cosmodrome is now of major importance for the Space Shuttle program.
